Why we’re getting behind Wendy Houvenaghel and London 2012.

We are delighted to announce that we are now supporting local cyclist, Wendy Houvenaghel, as she attempts to qualify for the London 2012 Olympic Games.

Following the appointment of BMW Group as the Official Automotive Partner of the 2012 Games, BMW is now actively supporting British athletes, such as Ellie Simmonds and Louis Smith, via the BMW London 2012 Performance Team. Meanwhile, in line with the Performance Team initiative, BMW dealers like us will be working with local athletes, supporting their endeavours to qualify for Team GB or ParalympicsGB.

Wendy Houvenaghel trains locally near Falmouth and rides domestically for the Bike Chain Ricci Cycling Team. The Bike Chain and Bissoe Cycle Hire & Cafe are two local businesses owned by Richard and Lizzie Pascoe situated near Redruth and Truro respectively, in Cornwall. Co Londonderry-born Wendy Houvenaghel, who has been based in Cornwall for the last 10 years, only recently took up Cycling at the age of 29, and after just five years as a professional athlete she has already won silver at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, three World Championship gold medals, three World Championship silver medals, a European gold medal and a Commonwealth Games silver medal. Wendy is currently ranked World number one in Track Cycling’s 3000m Women’s Team Pursuit.

“I'm really grateful to Ocean Falmouth and BMW for their support,” said Wendy. “It’s pretty tough trying to gain Olympic selection and to qualify our Team's place in the competition line up for next year’s Games. It’s a great help to know that Ocean are supporting me in my quest for a Team Pursuit gold medal, whilst also helping to raise funds and awareness in the lead up to the Games. It’s fantastic to have been given a brand new BMW 5 Series Touring Sport to drive from now until the end of the 2012 Games. I do a lot of travelling to Manchester and Wales for specific track training, to London to attend promotional events and to training and competition destinations, so it’s great being able to make the journeys in comfort and style.”

Anthony Scriverner, General Manager at Ocean Falmouth said: “This is a once in a lifetime opportunity, and our staff and customers are keen to be actively involved with London 2012. We’re really happy to be supporting Wendy Houvenaghel, especially since she has shown that she's a phenomenal athlete and a realistic gold medal contender who has achieved so much already. Her success can only be strengthened through our support and we wish this talented and locally based athlete every success in the process for London 2012 selection and her team’s quest for gold.”
